Bison by the Numbers: A Ratios and Rates Lab

Give your students a reason to care about ratios and proportional reasoning. In this seven-part interactive math lab, students step into the role of a herd program analyst and run one continuous job from start to finish: the numbers they work out on the first worksheet still matter on the last. Instead of a disconnected worksheet packet, they solve a real, unfolding problem, and every skill in the 6.RP cluster earns its place along the way.

The lab is built around the true story of a buffalo program that brought bison back to the Great Plains, which gives the math genuine stakes. But you need no special background to teach it. The lab supplies all the context through short intro slides, so any middle-grades math teacher, in any state, can run it confidently on day one.

What students do:

  • Describe a herd using ratios, in simplest form, telling part-to-part from part-to-whole
  • Convert units and use unit rates to turn land into carrying capacity
  • Compare two real prices quoted in different units by finding a common unit rate
  • Complete ratio tables and see a constant rate graph as a straight line through the origin
  • Apply percents to find a calf crop, a safe threshold, and a multi-year projection
  • Split a quantity in a given ratio and plan a real-world haul
  • Weigh competing limits and defend a final recommendation with their own numbers

Why teachers choose this lab:

  • Fully auto-graded. Every numeric and multiple-choice item scores instantly, with feedback. Nothing to mark.
  • Everything carries forward. One connected storyline, not seven separate exercises, so students stay invested.
  • Built-in reflection prompts. Ungraded written boxes give you ready-made discussion starters and a window into student thinking.
  • Flexible pacing. Run one worksheet a day or several in a session. You control the schedule.
  • Complete and ready to teach. Includes intro slide decks, a per-worksheet activity guide, a conclusion deck, a post-lab survey, and a teacher guide. Open and go.
  • Works across grades. Written to Grade 6 standards and equally strong as Grade 7 review or application.

Standards addressed: 6.RP.A.1, 6.RP.A.2, 6.RP.A.3a, 6.RP.A.3b, 6.RP.A.3c, 6.RP.A.3d, with supporting work in 6.EE.B.5.

Perfect for: ratios and proportional relationships units, real-world math application, sub plans and station work, math intervention and enrichment, or a memorable end-of-unit project. A ready-made, standards-aligned resource that makes ratios, rates, and percent feel like they matter.
